Vibrant illustrations throughout the book include many famous paintings, as well as many photographs of the artists.

Kids journey from the Netherlands to Paris to southern France as they learn about van Gogh’s friendships with four other like-minded painters who admired but were determined to depart from Impressionism: Paul Gauguin, Paul Signac, Emile Bernard, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Aspiring artists and history buffs learn not only how these Post-Impressionists’ daring shapes, colors, and techniques distinguished their work from what was painted before but also how the men helped one another and whether or not they always got along.

Twenty-one creative projects bring history and art to life. The text includes a time line, glossary, and reading list for further study.

Included are activities such as:

  • Starry Night peep box
  • create your own self portrait
  • make a Pointillist sailboat (that can really sail!)
  • craft a Japanese fold-out album
  • …and many more inventive, child-centered activities.

Monet and the Impressionists for Kids https://kidsart.com/product/monet-impressionists-kids/ Wed, 26 Mar 2014 17:48:45 +0000 http://kidsart.solga.com/?post_type=product&p=329 On April 15, 1874, an art exhibit opened that featured some of the most beautiful, well-loved paintings in the world? Well loved today, that is. In 1874, the artists couldn’t even give their paintings away. A painting of a harbor scene at sunrise especially outraged one critic. Its title was Impression, Sunrise. Jokingly, he called this group of rebel artists Impressionists. It wasn’t meant to be a compliment.

Today, the Impressionist artists are considered great masters of art, and their work is loved throughout the world. The colors, styles and images of the Impressionsists are especially appealing to children.

  • Explore Monet’s garden at Giverny.
  • Cezanne’s brilliant rectangles of color.
  • Create a still life in Cezanne’s tradition.
  • Seurat’s pointillism.
  • Degas’s sculpture-like circles of dancers.
  • Lots of painting activities in Impressionist style…shimmering sky, reflections, everyday people.
  • Explore Monet’s great “haystack” paintings.
  • …and many more inventive, child-centered activities.
